GOD'S WORD DAILY

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 54                                                                                                             SEPTEMBER 9, 2001

HOW JESUS LOVED, Part 8,
WORD OF THE DAY: "RESPECT & REST"

Scripture reference: Matthew 11:2-11:

"Now when John had heard in the prison the works
of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

And said unto him, Art thou he that should come,
or do we look for another?"

John had a question. He had some doubts. This man, who was given holy spirit from the womb,
needed reassurance. He was doing what God commanded him to do yet it landed him in jail. He
had a lot of time on his hands in jail! Certainly satan was trying to work him over and mess
with him. Maybe satan was telling him he was in jail for a lost cause, that Jesus wasn't
really the Son of God.

"Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew
John again those things which ye do hear and see:

The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk,
the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead
are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended
[to entrap, i.e. trip up (figuratively, stumble (transitively)
     or entice to sin)]
in me.

Jesus did not reem John out for his doubts. Instead, Jesus reassured John with the
firsthand accounts of his disciples. He offered blessed assurance.

" And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the
multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the
wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in
soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in
     kings' houses.

But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I
say unto you, and more than a prophet.

For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger
before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women
there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist:
     notwithstanding
[but, moreover] he that is least
in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."

Then Jesus spoke edifying words about John to the people. He lifted him up. Jesus did not
bad mouth John to the people for his doubts. He edified him. He showed respect. Jesus offered John rest.

Matthew 11:28-30

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek
and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

John was serving God and was burdened with detention in prison. He was laden with doubts.
He came to Jesus, indirectly, through his disciples. He learned the truth that Jesus was
indeed the Son of God, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil.
He received respect from Jesus and rest to his soul.

Likewise, we can come to Jesus and he will give us rest too. He understands that we are men.
He was tempted like we are. He has been through it too (yet without sin). Jesus will never
throw a yoke on us or overburden us. We have rest in Him and peace.
