JESUS CHRIST:
     The Foundation of our Faith

     ATONEMENT FOR SINS,
     Part 2

Last issue we defined atonement and discovered what that means to us today.
But what did atonement mean for Old Testament believers? Why should we contrast
the method from the past with what Jesus Christ accomplished for us?

The more we understand what God provided for us through His Son, Jesus Christ,
the more thankful and full of joy we will be about what we have been freely
     given in love!

Under the Law of Moses, the priests had to make sacrifices of lambs and
bullocks on the alter to first atone for their own sins [ Hebrews 7:27] and then,
for the sins of the people. The priests were imperfect humans who also needed
     to be cleansed from unrighteousness

The offering of sacrificed animals is pretty weird isn't it? Why would God
require a sacrifice that spills blood for the exchange of iniquity for righteousness?

     Leviticus 17:11

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have
given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement
for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an
          atonement for the soul.

Atonement indicates exchange. The death of the sacrifice was exchanged for the
     life of the people.

These sacrifices were not a permanent remedy for the sins and ignorance of
the people. [Leviticus 5:18] They had to be performed every year, and even
daily, [Hebrews7:27] throughout their generations [Exodus 30:10].

Why did the sacrifice using the blood of lambs and bullocks end? What changed?

Jesus was the final Passover, The Lamb of God. He offered himself up once and
     for all. [Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 10:10; Hebrews 10:12; 1 Corinthians 5:7;
      John 1:29, 36]

     Hebrews 9:12

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own
blood he entered in once into the holy place, having
          obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of
an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying
          of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through
the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge
your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

          {spot: or, fault}

The people have a permanent exchange for iniquity, ignorance and sin in the blood
offering of Jesus Christ! He completely fulfilled all the Law of Moses, He was
the Lamb of God without spot or blemish, he that knew no sin, became sin for us that
we may be made the righteousness of God in him! [ 1 Corinthians 5:21]

FANTASTIC! Thank you, Father for our righteousness and complete atonement through Christ!

What do we do with our complete atonement? That will be a question we look into next issue.
