Check Up from the Neck Up: Our Gauge

When drivers get prepared for a road trip, gauges are checked to make certain that the vehicle is ready for the long haul. The gas gauge is checked. If the gas tank is not full, the driver will top off the tank. The oil level is checked using the measure of the oil dipstick. If the oil is low, more oil is added. A tire air pressure gauge is used to measure air in tires. If low, air is added at the service station.

In like manner, we have gauges that need to be checked on a regular basis also. Is our love tank full? Are we empty of patience? Are our tires of honesty flattened by lies? Are we greasing our heart with the goodness of God or is it overheating because of the harassment of the wicked? Have we run out of peace or joy?

With what measure shall we measure these things?

There is but one measure of faith and practice: The Living Word of God.

Philippians 4 :8

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Think on these things for peace and joy. Hold fast in your mind to what is good, true, honest, just, pure, lovely, with good report or virtuous and praise worthy. Do live by the standard of God's Word. All else is like leaving on a road trip with an empty fuel tank or using a tire without air.

The proper measuring stick is the Word of God. Guard your heart with all diligence. For out of the abundance of the heart man speaks, and out of the heart proceed the issues, the borders, the boundaries of life. You will live and drive around your life within the borders that your heart and mouth have drawn for yourself.

Proverbs 4:20

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. {health: Heb. medicine}

23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. {let...: or, all thy ways shall be ordered aright} 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

God's Word is sharper than any two edge sword.It can divide the soul from the spirit and can discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Fill up your tanks with God's Word and think on these kinds of things. Your joy will become full and so will your peace. Amen.
