GOD'S WORD DAILY

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 12                                                  JULY 24, 2001

OUR WALK WITH GOD,
     WORD OF THE DAY: "CALLING"

Scripture reference: I Corinthians 7:17:

"But as God hath distributed (parted, divided into parts) to every man, as the Lord hath
called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches."

Bullinger's Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament defines "called,"
in this verse, " to call any one, invite, summon."

This verse is better understood in light of reading the context surrounding the verse. This verse instructs
us to walk as the Lord has called us. What does that mean?

Let's read the context of the above reference, using the Amplified Bible. Chapter 7 is talking about the
marriage relationship, but abiding in the call as you were summoned, applies to anybody who is called of God.

"Was any one at the time of his summons [from God] already circumcised?
Let him not seek to remove the evidence of circumcision. Was any one at the
time [God] called him uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised.

For circumcision is nothing, and counts for nothing, neither does
uncircumcision but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Everyone should remain after God calls him in the station or condition of
life in which the summons found him.

Were you a slave when you were called? Let not that trouble you.
But if you are able to gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.

For he who as a slave was summoned [to union] with the Lord is a freedman of the
Lord; just as he who was free when he was called is a bond servant of Christ, the Messiah.

     You were bought with a price--purchased with a preciousness and paid for [by Christ];
then do not yield yourselves up to become [in your own estimation] slaves to men
[but consider yourselves slaves to Christ].

So brethren, in whatever station or state or condition of life each one was when
he was called, let him continue there, with and close to God."

     I Corinthians 7:18-24 Amplified.

We were not slaves when God called us. We were free. So we live in the same manner of life, as
freemen, but we act as sold out bond servants to God, in keeping His commandments. We work
heartily, as unto the Lord, not unto men, anyway. The point isn't so much whether we were
free or slaves, circumcised or not, when we were called. The point is that we abide in the
same condition, in fellowship with God, keeping His commandments, in union with him, whether
bond, free, married, unmarried, circumcised or uncircumcised.Let not the place where you were
summoned be a stumbling block to you in your union with Christ.

Verse 25 is to the marriageable maidens, not as a command, but as advice.

"I think then, because of the impending distress (that is even now
setting in), it is well- expedient, profitable and wholesome- for a person
to remain as he or she is.

Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife?
     Do not seek a wife.

But if you do marry, you do not sin [in doing so]. Yet those who marry will
have physical and earthly troubles, and I would like to spare you of that.

     Verses 26-28

Our purpose is to fellowship with God, worship him and serve, not to get all distracted, seeking spouses
or seeking to be free from spouses. If our time is spent thinking and focussing upon our wishes for the
future and on fantasies, being unthankful where we are now, how can we serve God with undivided
attention or with any measure of effectiveness?

Let us continue to walk in our calling without distraction. Amen.
