FEAR GOD: The Benefits, Part 8,
     WORD OF THE DAY: "BANNER"

Scripture reference: Psalm 60:4, Amplified Bible:

"[But now] You have set up a banner for those who fear
and worshipfully revere You- to which they may flee from
the bow---a standard displayed because of the truth. Selah
[pause and calmly think about that]!"

Our word for today is a challenge for me because it is not a topic I am acquainted with. I thought,
upon first seeing this, that it was in reference to the Lord God our Banner, one of the redemptive
names of God. It is not. I thought it may have to do with a covering of some sort. It is not. From
what I can see and understand, "banner" is a standard, an ensign. It is from a Hebrew word that is
also translated to the English words: sail, standard, ensign.

Ensign = " a flag or banner, as a military or naval standard used to indicate
nationality. A badge of office or authority, as heraldic arms, the Presidential Seal, a police
badge. A sign, token or emblem: the dove, an ensign of peace."

Below, I have listed a few records that use this word, to help illustrate what it is.

1. God told Moses to make a brass serpent and put it on top of a pole. When a person, who was
bitten by a serpent, looked at it, he would live. (Numbers 21:8, 9)

2. Isaiah 30:17-21 KJV

"One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the
rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon
upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.

18 And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious
unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have
mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are
all they that wait for him.

19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt
weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice
of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.

20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and
the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed
into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:

21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is
the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when
     ye turn to the left."

3. Isaiah 49:22

"Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to
the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people…"

God has set up a banner, a standard for those who fear Him. It is a banner, a standard, to which
we can flee. It is a standard which represents truth, healing, life, deliverance and strength. It
represents who we are in Christ. It draws people unto God.

Let us flee to God's standard, to His Word. It is for our life, strength and deliverance.
